Abstract
Nonthermal plasmas are ideally suited for the synthesis of covalently bonded semiconductor nanocrystals that require relatively high synthesis temperatures. Such high temperatures are enabled by energetic reactions at the nanocrystal surfaces in conjunction with slow cooling in the low pressure gas phase environment. At the same time, unipolar electrical charging of the nanocrystals prevents coagulation and causes relatively monodisperse size distributions of the produced nanocrystals. This talk will describe the synthesis, functionalization, and device integration of both silicon and germaninum nanocrystals synthesized with nonthermal plasmas. Post-synthesis, a range of ligands has been chosen to functionalize the nanocrystal surfaces and impart certain functionalities. Nanocrystals were assembled into films both from the liquid and the gas phase that show good electrical properties combined with size-tunable absorption. Applications of silicon and germanium nanocrystal films in photovoltaic devices are discussed as well.
