Abstract

The ever-increasing use of computer graphics as a natural supplement for computer-aided design (CAD) is evident in today's technology. Computer graphics has increased steadily in complexity and scope, especially because of the popularity of CAD/CAM. This paper focuses on two different methods for approaching device independence. The difference between the approaches lies in the nature of the drivers. The authors feel that as more and more industries and universities focus attention on CAD/CAM, the concepts of standardization discussed will provide useful guidelines for programming. The epitome of graphics compatibility that is necessary for providing flexibility to current and future users of CAD/CAM can be achieved by incorporating the concepts addressed. Users can thereby avoid some of the expenses associated with some of the commercial device-independent graphics packages available in today's markets. It is hoped that users will extend the concepts addressed in this paper and will share their ideas to avoid a duplication of effort.
