Abstract

The different approaches for chemically modifying enzymes and proteins to obtain catalysts with either modified or completely new catalytic activities were described. With the advent of site directed mutagenesis, it is possible to introduce cysteine residues that can be introduced at any desired location and subsequently functionalized with a wide range reagents. Significant rate of catalytic acceleration was obtained in some cases.
