N2 - Significant advances relevant to the study of neurobiological mechanisms underlying mental retardation are summarized in this review. The advances include the identification of a mechanism linked to a proposed new form of X-linked mental retardation and to mechanisms underlying other known disorders, including phenylketonuria, Williams, Smith-Lemli-Opitz, Angelman, and fragile X syndromes. The implications of these studies are relevant to diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of disorders. They are also relevant to making generalizations regarding neurobiologic explanations for behavior.
