Abstract

Genome-based analytical tools enable engineers to take a systems approach to bioprocessing. Proteins that require complex post-translational modifications are generally synthesized in mammalian cells because microbial hosts lack the necessary machinery to create such modifications. Many other new products being developed and tested clinically are also antibodies or antibody-based molecules, such as Fc-fusion proteins. Engineered proteins are opening up the possibility of new products with improved pharmacokinetics and efficacy.
