Abstract
A patient developing hepatoma and erythrocytosis after 16 yr with hemochromatosis is presented. Assay for erythropoietin revealed significantly increased activity. Absence of activity in the presence of anti ESF indicated the serum contained antigenically normal human erythropoietin. The patient is compared to reported cases of hepatoma developing in treated hemochromatosis with the conclusion that therapy does not prevent malignancy nor is the period for diagnosis of hemochromatosis to the diagnosis of hepatoma related to the aggressiveness of therapy.
