Abstract

In a recent article, Joseph Cotter argues for a new supplement at Hippon. fr. 95.3 Dg. = 92.3 W. and on that basis proposes revising the definition of opxic; in LSJ.1 These are in one sense minor issues; the supplement merely confirms what scholars have always thought the line must say, although no one has ever discovered how to make it say it, and the proposed new sense of opxi<; is confined to this passage alone. But Cotter's arguments raise important methodological considerations having to do with how we discuss problematic words and texts, and the matter accordingly deserves closer scrutiny.
