Hollow calcium phosphate microcarriers for bone regeneration: In vitro osteoproduction

Abstract

The elution kinetics and bioactivity of osteogenic protein-1 eluted from hollow hydroxyapatite (HA) and tricalcium phosphate (TCP) ceramic microcarriers were evaluated. Hollow 750 μm diameter dense and porous HA and TCP microcarriers were loaded with a standard quantity of OP-1 through lyophilization. Mesenchymal stem cells cultures were prepared from the bone marrow of juvenile rat femurs, tibiae and humeri. The results indicate that hollow HA and TCP microcarriers provide an effective delivery vehicle for sustained release of OP-1 and other proteins or drugs.
