Abstract

A monitoring system based on the daily home measurement of selected variables has been developed for patients with cystic fibrosis. Measured variables include height, weight, pulse, breathing rate and vital capacity, as well as symptom occurrence. This information is being used to develop an early detection and intervention program to identify the onset and progression of deteriorating conditions before they are readily apparent to the patient. Early clinic recall and possible changes in therapy could then be initiated to prevent the acute exacerbations and progressive complications that are a hallmark of the disease.
