Abstract
This presentation summarizes the basic function of the immune system, its role in the critically ill patient and alterations of this system currently under investigation. Due to the vast information available on chemical alterations of the immune system, I have chosen to simplistically describe immunopotentiation, as well as immunomodulation, in the critically ill patient.
