Approaches to instream flow studies are discussed. It is suggested that the effective modelling of the effect of flow changes on a given stream site requires accurate characterization of the channel and habitats, data on habitat use at each scale, and modelling strategies effectively combining the physical and biological information. This approach was applied to the Truckee River in the western USA. (D.W.T.)
