Abstract

Feces of man and other warm-blooded animals are the major sources of pathogens that are carried in water. To test for the presence of all these pathogens in water is neither feasible nor cost-effective. Also, methods are not yet available for detecting the presence of all pathogens with any reasonable degree of accuracy. It is logical, therefore, to seek an indicator organism(s) whose presence may indicate fecal pollution of a given water source. One such group of indicator organisms is the coliform group of bacteria.
