Abstract

A Wilcox seam lignite mined from a test pit in Arkansas was evaluated as an energy source for production of industrial fuel gas. The evaluation includes results from a full scale gasification test of the lignite and an economic analysis of the integration of a lignite-fired gas plant into an existing industrial facility to replace natural gas in the facility. The results of the gasification testing were used to prepare a preliminary design for a lignite-fueled gas plant to supply low-Btu gas to replace natural gas in industrial furnaces. An economic analysis based on the preliminary design indicates that fuel gas from lignite could be produced for 3. 65 to 4. 05 per million Btu. These costs are competitive with purchased natural gas costs in much of the Gulf Coast area.
