Influence of blood transfusions on immune responsiveness

Abstract

Patients receiving >5 BT are more likely to display weak immune responsiveness, normal percentages of OKT 8 + T cells, and strong suppressor cell function in vitro. These immunologic traits may account for the beneficial effect of transfusions on graft survival. Phenotypic enumeration of OKT 8+ cells does not indicate suppressor function of these cells, since end-stage renal disease patients with normal OKT 8+ cells with >5 BT had greater suppressor function than those with <5 BT. These studies suggest that long-term evaluations of immune responsiveness may more accurately reflect influence of transfusions than isolated early posttransfusion testing.
