Abstract

The influence of hexadecanol (HD) and palmitic acid (PA) on the molecular packing and phase transition temperature of dipalmitoylphosphatidyl-choline (DPCC) monolayers was investigated at the air-water interfaces. The morphology and phase behavior of DPCC/HD monolayers and mixed DPCC/PA was determined by fluorescence microscopy and pressure-area-isotherms. The temperature of the liquid-expanded to condensed phase transition was increased by the addition of PA or HD to DPCC monolayers. The increase in amount of the single chain surfactant lead to a reduction in tilt angle of the aliphatic chains at a surface pressure of 40 mN/m.
