Abstract
The insulin resistance syndrome (hyperinsulinemia, hypertension, dyslipidemia and obesity) is present during childhood. Important questions remain about timing of its onset, functional interrelations among its components, and basic metabolic and physiologic actions that may be etiologically related to cardiovascular risk. Clarification of these issues during childhood may lead to prevention or treatment strategies to reduce the morbidity and and mortality of adult cardiovascular disease.
