Abstract
This article gives an overview of the literature concerning the intima- media thickness (IMT) as a morphological screening parameter for cardiovascular risk. IMT can be determined making use of B-Mode Ultrasound. Correlations between common carotid artery IMT and several cardiovascular risk factors have been reported. A relationship with coronary artery disease has been described as well. This non-invasive technique can be used to assess early atherosclerosis and offers interesting future perspectives.
