Abstract
A high-field interventional MR suite incorporating a 1.5 T Philips Gyroscan ACS-NT MR scanner is described. Preliminary neurosurgical applications have included 24 brain biopsies and 15 tumour resections. Fifteen other neurosurgical procedures, including laminectomies, cyst and abscess drainages, catheter placements, nerve blocks and bone biopsies have also been performed under MR monitoring/guidance. The 'closed' system can be used to guide major neurosurgery as well as minimally invasive neuroradiological procedures. Moreover, artifacts related to surgical instrumentation are manageable at high field. The additional benefits associated with high-field systems open the door to progressively more sensitive surgical procedures.
