Abstract
The water transport properties are investigated in the presence of external ice, isolated pig hepatocytes, and cultured rat hepatocyte spheroids. The water permeability parameters can be combined with models for internal ice formation to estimate optimum freezing conditions for bulk cryogenic storage of isolated hepatocytes. A cryomicroscopy system is used to perform the freezing investigations. The results from these studies will be used to determine protocols for the cryopreservation of hepatocytes or spheroids for use in a bioartificial liver.
