Abstract

The method described here utilized spark plugs as ionization probes to detect flame arrival times in a combustion chamber. The arrival times, when used to determine average flame velocities, show flame propagation patterns. The flame propagation, when related to pressure rise rates, peak pressures, and Bmeps, can help the designer find an optimum spark plug location in a combustion chamber.
