Abstract
Chromatography of 1.6 g lyophilized Crotalus horridus atricaudatus snake venom on a 2.5 x 100 cm column of Bio-Gel equilibrated with water was carried out. The adsorbed material constitutes the most basic protein components in snake venom. Toxicity study was performed on both venom and isolated basic protein to investigate the possible involvement of calcium ions in cell killing process. The results of this study showed that the cell killing by Crotalus horridus atricaudatus basic protein is calcium-independent and the time of cell killing was 15 minutes. This suggests that the venom and basic protein modify the cell membrane components and lead to rapid cell killing.
