Issues with numerical simulation of core disking

Abstract

A challenge in rock mechanics is the determination of in-situ stresses in regions of high magnitude stress. In certain situations, core extraction results in damage in the form of core disking and researchers have attempted to relate the disk thickness to the in-situ stress state. This paper investigates the core disking phenomenon using FLAC, and it is shown that an appropriate constitutive relation must promote tensile failure in order to replicate the disking process for a wide range of stresses. Various issues that arise during the simulation are also addressed.
