Abstract

The objective of this paper is to present the design of a new oil pumping mechanism. The presentation will include the design methodology along with a discussion of a suggested final design (patent pending). The complex dynamics of the sucker rod had to be represented in a manner that allowed for the selection of a mechanism from the multitude of possibilities. Both the type and dimensional synthesis processes had to consider the kinematic and dynamic aspects of the mechanism simultaneously. To overcome these problems specialized design rules were developed. A comparison of the suggested mechanism design with current designs indicates major improvements in physical size, reliability, torque loading, and flexibility. The design also offers significant improvements in polished rod loads, and power consumption.
