Abstract

Squeezing flow between two disks with lubricated surfaces is more nearly extensional the more effective the lubricating films on the plates. Two analyses of this flow are reported. One is an approximate, asymototic, analytical solution for Newtonian lubricating flow in the films and mixed shear and extensional flow in the viscous layer between. The second is a full two-dimensional axi-symmetric solution for Newtonian liquids, the Stokes equations being solved by the Galerkin/finite element method of computer-aided analysis. Published experimental data of Chatraei, Macosko, and Winter for steady lubricated squeezing flows induced by an external constant force are compared with the asymptotic and finite element solutions.
