Abstract

Nanocrystalline LiFe5O8 particles of several nanometers in size have been prepared by the PEG gel method, their particle structure, morphology and magnetic properties were examined by XRD, TEM and VSM. It was found that σsbulk decreases with decreasing particle size, where σs is the saturation magnetization. The surface effect is probably the dominant effect in the decrease of σs. The Curie temperature of LiFe5O8 (9.1 nm in diameter) decreased to 580°C which is lower than that of bulk LiFe5O8 (620°C).
