Magnetically-oriented tissue-equivalent tubes: application to a circumferentially-oriented media-equivalent

Abstract

Circumferential orientation of collagen fibrils in a media-equivalent (ME) was achieved in a simple and effective way using the orienting effect of a strong magnetic field during collagen fibrillogenesis when the ME was first created (Tranquillo, et al). Circumferential orientation of the entrapped smooth muscle cells (SMC) was achieved subsequently via previous methods. Evidence of circumferential orientation were observed from ME birefringence and circumferential cell orientation, accelerated ME contraction, and increased stiffness with reduced creep in the circumferential direction. The optimization of the methods to better mimic the circumferential orientation and mechanical properties of a natural media is discussed.
