Abstract

These two quotations express the major thesis and antithesis to be explored in this chapter. The first quotation suggests that empathic accuracy and understanding are good for relationships. If each partner fully comprehends the other's thoughts, feelings, hopes, fears, intentions, and desires, there is presumably no offense that cannot be forgiven. In contrast, the second quotation suggests that empathic accuracy and understanding can be bad for relationships. If each partner fully comprehends the other's point of view and subjective experience, there is presumably no offense that ever can be forgiven.
