Different imaging modalities are available in veterinary medicine: radiography (myelography and without preparation), the computed tomography (CT) scanner (and myelotomography) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). They each have their advantages and disadvantages, but CT and MRI examinations are becoming the methods of choice and are being increasingly used. The choice of method depends on the availability of materials but also on the animal (breed and size), the clinical picture, the location of the myelopathy and cost. MRI has an additional advantage in that the effects of the disc herniation on the spinal cord may be evaluated, providing a prognosis in some cases.
