Modeling and measurement of residual stress due to polishing

Abstract

The residual stresses that resulted from polishing metal disk surfaces were measured. Nickel-phosphorus plated aluminum alloy disks were polished and the residual stresses determined. A model relating residual stress to disk curvature was developed. Residual stresses were calculated from measurements of disk curvatures when material was removed from one side of the disk. Residual stresses due to plating and polishing were separated. For the particular fine finishing polishing process used, the residual stresses were seen to be isotropic in the plane of the disk and had a value of about 70 MPa.
