Abstract
To the Editor: Dr. Whyte argues persuasively (Feb. 11 issue)* that safer-sex education is often enhanced by the use of vernacular terms and drawings that show safe sex in an erotic light. However, he does not extend his analyses to the most important controversy — whether or not materials that describe methods of reducing the risk of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) will acknowledge and accept male homosexuality. As a physician caring for many persons with AIDS, I mainly see gay or bisexual men. The risks for men engaging in unprotected sex with men must be at least 100-fold higher.
