Abstract

We report 3 cases of tuberculosis occurring after liver transplantation. Two patients presented with fever, 2 and 8 months after transplantation, while the third patient was asymptomatic. In the first case, disseminated disease developed rapidly; the other 2 patients presented with pulmonary disease only. In all patients the mycobacterial infection was treated with INH, rifampin and pyrazinamide, as well as ethambutol in the first case. Anti-tuberculous treatment was complicated in the first case by development of severe INH hepatitis after 9 months, necessitating drug withdrawal. The prophylaxis, diagnosis and treatment of mycobacterial infections in liver transplant recipients are discussed.
