Abstract
As other entries in this handbook have made clear, capillary electrophoresis has led to tremendous improvements in electrophoretic separations, both in terms of separation speed and automation. From the standpoint of speed, the dominant advantage of capillary electrophoresis is the faster dissipation of Joule heat as the surface area to volume ratio increases, permitting much higher applied voltages. Automation has also played a key role, for example in DNA sequencers, by allowing massively parallel operation and high throughput without much user input.
