Abstract

Polylactide (PLA) is a commercially available polyester that is completely biodegradable in a compost environment. Methods for the preparation of PLA-containing block copolymers as nanostructure templates, crystallization modifiers, and for rubber toughened PLA formulations are investigated. A combination of anionic polymerization and coordination-insertion polymerization are used to prepare a range of polyisoprene-PLA and polystyrene-PLA block copolymers. This combination of `mechanistically incompatible' polymer pairs requires a multi-step process that involves changing the polymerization mechanism to facilitate the synthesis of model materials. This concept is applied to the preparation of novel block copolymers containing PLA.
