Abstract

The role of computers in the fields of nanotechnology, genomics and biological computing is discussed. Since the 1980s, the computer industry has shifted to a truly consumer mass-market with the introduction of the PC, the DOS interface and the Apple Macintosh. With an estimated 250 million computers running Windows operating systems, the PC-based microcomputer has become the major computer system available worldwide.
