Abstract

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) installation planning is critical both to the final quality of the acquired images and to the safety of the surrounding environment. Accordingly, as the medical center's engineering interface to the vendor, the clinical engineer must become accutely aware of the parameters and difficulties involved in the installation of a clinical NMR system. This paper addresses the requirements of three different NMR magnet designs as follows: 1) Resistive magnets, 2) Superconducting magnets, and 3) Permanent magnets. The parameters of concern in any NMR installation are as follows: 1) Power, cooling, and air handling, 2) Access and floor loading, 3) Radio frequency shielding, 4) Effects of magnetic field on environment, 5) Effects of environment on magnetic field. We report on our tabulations of the recommendations of the various NMR vendors as to their constraints and solutions to the above problems. In addition, we report on our experimental studies of the impact of ferromagnetic objects on magnetic field homogeniety as a function of object mass and distance from the magnet center.
