Abstract

We investigate the stability of simple planar shear flow between moving parallel plates for non-aligning nematic liquid crystals. We present numeri- cal results for the continuation of the non-planar solution branch from its bifurcation from the planar solution branch which agree with the experi- mental results of Pieranski and Guyon that at a critical shear rate the director turns out of the shear plane to an orientation nearly orthogonal to the shear plane.
