Abstract
A noninvasive method for measuring compliance of the finger vessels was tested in six subjects (three in the age range of 58-68 years and the other three in age range of 24-26 years). A photoplethysmographic waveform was used as an indicator of intravascular volume change, and an instrument using a finger cuff was used to measure the blood pressure. For each individual, several compliance measurements were taken at discrete values of local mean arterial pressure (P mean). There was a statistically significant difference in intravascular finger compliance between the younger and older subjects over a range of P mean from 40 to 60 mmHg.
