Abstract

Many laws have been proposed for the failure of brittle materials. These divide into two main categories - volume and surface integrals. To evaluate these for a complex body requires an initial finite element analysis followed by postprocessing to evaluate the integrals. How this can be achieved efficiently and effectively so that the errors are similar to those associated with the initial finite element analysis is discussed.
