Abstract

Laminar-to-turbulent transition in hypersonic flows may increase heat transfer rates significantly. Detached Eddy Simulations have been performed to investigate the effects of non-equilibrium thermo-chemistry on high-enthalpy roughness-induced transition to turbulence. Both non-reacting and reacting flow solutions have been obtained for a hemisphere with a disk-like surface roughness element in a ballistic range at Mach 15 in CO2 gas, simulating a Mars-like atmosphere.
