Abstract
The active site for CO oxidation on nanoparticle Au/TiO2 catalysts has been discerned from IR spectroscopic studies of the process at ∼ 120 K, where kinetic simplifications exist due to the low temperature. It has been found that in the presence of O2(g), the Au particles (∼2 nm diameter) catalyze the formation of CO2 from CO molecules which are adsorbed on the TiO2. Accurate first-order kinetics in CO coverage on TiO2 are observed, and surprisingly CO coadsorbed on Au is found to be much less active. These results clearly indicate that the interface between Au and TiO2 possesses the catalytic activity observed, in agreement with indirect or theoretical deductions by others.
