Abstract

A systematic approach to study the flexibility of multibody systems is developed independent of the strain energy model selected to describe the elastic deformation. The application of the proposed formulation to a rotating two-dimensional Euler-Bernoulli beam shows that supplementary terms due to coupling between rigid-body kinematics and elastic curvature contribute to the transverse vibrations of the beam not accounted for by Rayleigh's formulation. Further application of the methodology to a rotating three-dimensional Timoshenko beam shows that out-of-plane vibrations can occur due to in-plane excitation.
