Abstract

Alboglossiphonia heteroclita, a relatively immobile suctorial carnivore of freshwater macroinvertebrate prey, possesses a large, diverticulated gut. The energy maximization principle predicts that cumulative ingestion rate (m.tm -1) should remain constant with feeding time (tm) on each prey item but for A. heteroclita it continually reduced with tm, attributed to both a food and feeder constraint. Rate of gut emptying decreased exponentially with intercatch interval. Results suggest that this species filled its gut at each meal. -from Authors
