Abstract

This paper briefly reviews the present switch-mode converter topologies used in various power electronics applications. In order to fully derive the benefits of high switching frequencies, the future direction is to use converters which utilize resonant-circuit concepts to achieve zero-voltage and/or zero-current switchings. Some of these resonant converters are as follows: resonant-load converters, resonant-switch converters, resonant-dc-link converters and high-frequency-link converters. These are discussed in terms of their basic principle of operation, merits and demerits and potential applications.
