Abstract
Theoretical considerations of chemical reactions taking place during reaction injection molding of thermosets, are followed by a description of an experimental program in which mold filling with monomers or prepolymers was investigated as a function of process variables. It is demonstrated that the ratio of filling time to isothermal gel time as defined by equation is the main parameter governing filling for the RIM process. The two characteristics of the RIM process that are essential to the conclusions obtained here are, first that the viscosity rise with reaction be fairly sharp, i. e. the existence of a definite gel point. The second is that the temperature difference between the material at the entrance of the mold and the mold will be smaller than 25 degree C.
