Abstract

A preliminary report has been given on 458 patients in a randomized study of the use of preoperative radiation in cancer of the sigmoid and rectum. A slightly but not significantly higher postoperative mortality has been observed in treated patients, but there has been no obvious connection with the treatment. Thus far, survival in the treated and control groups has remained the same although additional follow-up data will be necessary for final assessment.
