Abstract

Explicit development of self-directed and lifelong learning abilities is needed to create a foundation for success as practitioners. This chapter calls for faculty, continuing education (CE) professionals and clinicians supervising students to work together for focused attention on learning skill development in health professions curricula. In addition, the chapter poses questions related to enhancing CE preparation for consideration by faculty, clinical supervisors and CE professionals. Furthermore, it suggests continuing professional development (CPD) as a method to arm our students for success in responding to the daily demands for learning, as well as taking responsibility for their ongoing competency. The chapter concludes by discussing challenges to CPD and recommendations for implementing CPD with students.
