Abstract

From the work of physicians, anatomists, and philosophers from the Medieval and Renaissance eras to the vast expansion of knowledge on brain anatomy and functioning during the 19th and early 20th century to the development of more refined treatments (particularly pharmacologic treatments), diagnostic criteria, and imaging techniques of the past 70 years, the history of psychiatry and neuroscience is a fascinating subject. This chapter profiles 82 historical and contemporary psychiatrists, neuroscientists, and scientists who have made substantial contributions to the diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric disorders.
