A gel/enzyme device was constructed in an effort to mimic the periodic, pulsatile endogenous release of hormones. The swelling and permeability of the device to hormones exhibits regular autonomous pulsations. The device functions by negative feedback, with hysteresis, between a mechanical system which regulates the availability of endogenous glucose the enzyme glucose oxidase, and chemical system which produces protons which bind reversibly to the gel and hence alter the gel's swelling and permeability to glucose.
