    Abstract

Recent advances in real time hydrometeorology are critically reviewed. Presented are the principles of flood forecasting with models that couple meteorological with hydrologic components and that are complemented with state estimators for real time state updating from precipitation and streamflow observations. The nature of the real-time coupling of these stochastic-dynamical hydrometeorological models is investigated. The cases for which such coupling of meteorological and hydrologic components appears to be most beneficial to flood forecasting are identified. -from Authors
