Abstract

A corotational velocity-strain formulation for the large deflection analysis of curved shells is presented. The curvature of the shell is treated through the use of a shallow shell theory within each element. It is shown by recourse to a simple curved beam model that the use of the shallow shell theory introduces a reasonably accurate representation of moment-membrane coupling but introduces excessive energy absorption in the bending response unless reduced integration is employed. Results are given for a number of problems to verify this analysis and to study the effectiveness of curved elements; in the problems considered, the advantage of curved elements over straight elements is at most moderate and often absent.
